Design

The coins design closely mirrors that of a real baseball. Todays balls are made with a layered rubber core, wound tightly with hundreds of yards of yarn, and finished with white cowhide. The exterior is stitched together using 108 red cotton stitches, which create the raised seams that affect how the ball moves in play. These same features are reflected in the coin, along with the Samoan coat of arms and other key markings.

History

In the early years of the sport, baseballs featured rubber cores wrapped in yarn, then covered in leather. Because there were no official guidelines, each ball could perform differently. In 1876, the National League put standards in place, including size and weight, which remain mostly the same today.
