History

During World War I, the Navy protected transatlantic convoys from U-boat attacks and dispatched a battleship group to aid the British Grand Fleet. In the following years, the Washington (1922) and London (1930) Naval Treaties restricted battleship construction but encouraged progress in carrier and aviation development. Despite lean budgets in the 1930s, the Navy advanced its strategy and technology, preparing for future challenges as tensions rose across the Pacific.
