History

Paul Kruger was elected President of the South African Republic (Transvaal) in 1883 and remained in office until 1900. His time in leadership coincided with the rapid growth of the regions gold mining industry, which brought new challenges and tensions. His policies to limit political rights for foreign miners, along with growing British influence, helped spark the Second Boer War in 1899.
