History

In 1900, during the Second Boer War, President Paul Kruger left the Transvaal as British troops advanced. Traveling by train to Loureno Marques (today Maputo) in Portuguese East Africa, he then sailed to Europe to seek international support for the Boer cause. Kruger lived the rest of his life in exile, mainly in the Netherlands, where he was celebrated as a national hero despite his failed efforts to gain European assistance. He died in 1904 in Clarens, Switzerland, at the age of 78.
