History

The United States Mint released the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo in 2006 as the first U.S. bullion coin struck in 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold. It provided an alternative to the 22-karat Gold Eagle series that had long been the Mints main gold bullion option. Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the Gold Buffalo was created to offer a U.S. competitor to major 24-karat gold coins from around the world, including the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
