Obverse

The obverse of the 2026 1 oz Silver African Ounce Spotted Hyena Coin shows the national coat of arms of Rwanda. This detailed design includes a woven basket in the center, surrounded by sorghum and coffee branches. Below the basket is a cogwheel, and above it, a rising sun. Indigenous shields appear on either side of the emblem, while the full image is enclosed by a rope and knot, representing unity.

Reverse

For the reverse design of the 2026 Rwandan Silver African Ounce Spotted Hyena Coin, youll see the familiar outline of the African continent that appears on every issue in the series. The lower-left portion of the coin depicts a Spotted Hyena with its cubs. These animals are powerful predators with complex social lives, often misunderstood as scavengers. Their spotted coats and unique vocalizations, which sound like laughter, make them well known across Africa.

History

Spotted hyenas live throughout sub-Saharan Africa, from the grasslands of the Serengeti to semi-desert areas and mountain regions as high as 4,000 meters. They adapt easily to new conditions and tend to prefer open or lightly wooded areas that fit their hunting habits and cooperative nature.
