History

On December 25 and 26, 1776, General Washington led the Continental Army across the ice-covered Delaware River in a risky overnight maneuver. Facing freezing temperatures and dangerous river conditions, the army crossed into New Jersey to surprise Hessian troops at Trenton. The successful attack resulted in a much-needed victory and helped revive morale among American forces. Combined with a later victory at Princeton, the crossing helped change the momentum of the war.
