History

The United States Mint struck 35% Silver War Nickels between 1942 and 1945 as part of the countrys wartime effort during WWII. Since nickel metal was needed for military equipment and supplies, the Mint temporarily changed the composition of the Jefferson Nickel. These special wartime coins were produced using 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. As a result, the coins often have a slightly different appearance from modern nickels. Another easy way to identify them is the large mint mark displayed above Monticello on the reverse side.
