History

The discovery of gold in Western Australia during the 1880s and 1890s turned the struggling Swan River Colony into a thriving region. Although small finds occurred earlier, major discoveries began in 1887 at Southern Cross, around 370 kilometers east of Perth. Even larger finds came in 1892 at Coolgardie and 1893 at Kalgoorlie, which became one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world.
