Product Description

The Royal Mint introduced the Great Britain Gold Sovereign in 1817 following the Great Recoinage in the United Kingdom. The coins featured Pound sterling denominations and were issued for circulation, though this practice ended in the Interwar Period in the 20th century. During Queen Elizabeth IIs reign, the Sovereign returned as a bullion coin. Right now, BGASC has Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins available to purchase online.

  • Arrives inside protective plastic flips!
  • Sovereigns of Queen Elizabeth IIs reign started in the 1950s!
  • Comes with various dates!
  • Contains .2354 Troy oz of actual gold content.

  • Please remember it is possible for these coins to feature various dates and portraits of Her Majesty.

BGASC offers you the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin for purchase in protective plastic flips. These coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and come with dates largely from the 1960s and 1970s. The coins available here feature only portraits of Queen Elizabeth II from early in her reign.

Obverse

In the obverse design of Great Britain Gold Sovereigns, the Royal Mint features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. These particular coins feature either Mary Gillicks first-generation portrait of the Queen or Arnold Machins second-generation portrait of Her Majesty.

Reverse

For the reverse face of the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin, the Royal Mint has long featured Benedetto Pistruccis 1817 depiction of St. George slaying a dragon. This design shows St. George on horseback slaying the dragon with his weapon.

History

Great Britain Gold Sovereigns have long featured a monarch effigy on the obverse, with Queen Elizabeth II the most prominent. Her Majesty graced all coins issued from 1952 to 2022. With her passing in September 2022, the reign of Englands longest-lived monarch came to a close.
