History

Oklahomas history with oil dates back to the Nellie Johnstone No. 1 well near Bartlesville in 1897, which marked the start of the states transformation into an energy hub. Major finds like the Glenn Pool oil field in 1905 brought dramatic changes, creating a rush of new wealth and population growth. Tulsa soon became known as the Oil Capital of the World, leading the state to become a major oil producer by the 1920s.
