Design

The artwork on the 25 Oklahoma Goldback Gold Note displays a woman seated on the hood of a 1950s-era vehicle along Route 66. With nearly 400 miles of Route 66 running through Oklahoma, the state became central to the highways identity. When the route was created in 1926, Oklahoma became a symbolic location, especially during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, which were later described in John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath.

History

Route 66 brought life to many small towns in Oklahoma. Places like Elk City, Catoosa, and Clinton thrived thanks to passing travelers, roadside restaurants, and motels. Although most of the road was eventually bypassed by Interstate 40, some sections have been saved and now serve as popular heritage travel routes.
