Junk Silver

90% Silver Coins are often referred to as Junk Silver. This is due to them offering no numismatic value to investors of silver bullion. Most people purchase 90% Silver Coins simply for the silver value of the coin or to add to their collection.

History of 90% Silver Coins

The US Mint first started issuing coins in 1792. Silver Coins in this era were made of a copper and silver mixture to give these coins durability.

From 1794 to 1836, most denominations of US coinage were made with a silver content of 89.2% and a copper content of 10.8%. This was changed in 1836 with the introduction of the Seated Liberty design as the silver content in US coins was upped to 90%.

This lasted until 1964. However, US Half Dollars from 1965 to 1970 contained 40% silver. Nowadays, US Silver Coins are made of a nickel, copper, and zinc mixture.

90% Silver Coins debuted in 1836 with the Seated Liberty design and lasted until 1964. US Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars, and Dollars all had multiple designs that featured 90% silver. This includes the following:

  • US Dollar: Seated Liberty (1840-1873), Morgan Silver Dollar (1878-1921), Peace Silver Dollar (1921-1935).
  • US Half Dollar: Seated Liberty (1839-1891), Barber Coinage (1892-1915), Walking Liberty (1916-1947), Benjamin Franklin (1948-1963), Kennedy Half Dollar (1964 only).
  • US Quarter: Seated Liberty (1838-1891), Barber Coinage (1892-1916), Standing Liberty (1916-1930), Washington Quarter (1932-1964).
  • US Dime: Seated Liberty (1837-1891), Barber Coinage (1892-1916), Mercury/ Winged Liberty (1916-1945), Roosevelt Dime (1946-1964).
