Armenian Silver Noah’s Ark Coins at BGASC
The Armenian Silver Noah’s Ark Series debuted in 2011 and has been issued annually ever since. Despite being a relatively newer coin program on the market, it’s proven to be popular for its stunning design and the number of different sizes available. Series Background
This series debuted in 2011. Coins are struck by Geiger Edelemetalle, located in Germany, but these coins are financially backed by Armenia. The coin program debuted with 3 sizes, ranging from 1/4 oz to 1 oz. The following year, 4 larger sizes were introduced. Coins have been released in these 7 sizes every year since. These sizes include the following:
- 5 Kilograms (160.754 Troy oz)
- 1 Kilogram (32.1507 Troy oz)
- 10 Troy oz
- 5 Troy oz
- 1 Troy oz
- 1/2 Troy oz
- 1/4 Troy oz
The series is inspired by the popular Noah’s Ark story in the Bible. Noah built an ark that was big enough to house his family and 2 of every animal, thanks to God’s warning. God was set to punish humanity for their sins and thus caused a flood so massive that it engulfed the Earth. Once the water started to subside, Noah released a dove. Once the dove didn’t return, Noah knew it had found land. Noah and the ark eventually found refuge at the top of Mount Ararat.
While technically located in Turkey, Mount Ararat was once a part of Armenia, and can still be best seen from Armenia. Mount Ararat and the story of Noah’s Ark are so integral to Armenia that imagery of the story can be seen in the country’s coat of arms.
Design of the Armenian Silver Noah’s Ark Coins
The series is named for its stunning reverse design. This design shows Noah’s Ark at sea. Mount Ararat is seen in the background while a dove flying at the viewer is displayed in the foreground. The reverse design has not changed since the coin program was initially issued.
The obverse shows the Armenian coat of arms. A shield is being propped up by a lion and an eagle. The shield not only shows heraldic lions and eagles but also a depiction of Noah’s Ark atop Mount Ararat.
