The Perth Mint’s Australian Koala Series debuted in 2007 as a silver bullion program featuring yearly designs of Australia’s famous tree-dwelling marsupial. Perth Mint Australia Silver Koalas at BGASC
The Perth Mint introduced the Silver Koala Series in 2007. These coins have changing imagery on the reverse every year of the popular animal. In 2007, these coins debuted in just a 1 oz size. The following year, the Perth Mint debuted three other options (1 kilogram, 10 oz, and 1/2 oz.) In 2016, the 10 oz and 1/2 oz coin was dropped. Obverse and Reverse Designs
As mentioned above, the reverse design changed annually on these Perth Mint Silver Koalas. While the overall motif of a koala is always presented the actual design changes annually.
The obverse of these coins, similar to other Perth Mint coin programs, features the effigy of the reigning British monarch on the obverse. Over the years the following designs have been displayed.
- 2007-2018: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
- 2019-2023: Queen Elizabeth II created by Jody Clark
- 2024-Present: King Charles III depicted by Dan Thorne.
Furthermore, in 2018 the Perth Mint started making these coins with a purity of .9999 silver. From 2007 to 2017, these coins had a purity of just .999 silver.
Unique Strikes of Silver Koalas
These coins are released in just a 1 oz and 1 kilogram size. 1 oz coins have a mintage cap of 300,000 every year while 1-kilogram coins have a mint-to-order mintage.
However, while BU coins are only available in those 2 sizes, there are many other unique strikes of these Silver Koalas.
- Proof: Proof coins have a mirrored-like background with frosted design elements. Coins are struck at least twice to create this effect.
- High-relief, gilded: These coins are struck with high-relief visuals. Furthermore, the reverse design is gilded giving each coin a thin layer of 24-karat gold.
