Johnson Matthey

Percival Johnson opened a gold assayer building in London in 1817. In 1851, George Matthey joined the company. The company name was quickly changed to Johnson & Matthey, and in the following year, they became the official assayer to the Bank of England. The company over time became a trusted and reputable name in the industry. By 2015, they sold their refiners to Asahi Refining. However, Johnson Matthey’s products still live on via the secondary market. Read more about Johnson Matthey and their bullion bars, right here at BGASC.

What is the Secondary Market?

A secondary market item is an item that comes from us from a party other than the original mint. Due to the fact that Johnson Matthey is no longer producing precious metal bars, all of our Johnson Matthey products are given to us via the secondary market.

Gold Bars

In terms of gold bars, we have minted ingots and cast bars available for purchase. Minted ingots will have the Johnson Matthey logo, metal content, and purity listed on the obverse. The reverse will have a repeating pattern of the logo. Some bars will list a unique serial number on the obverse.

Also available are cast gold bars. These bars feature minimalistic identifying marks on the obverse along with an intentionally blank reverse.

Silver Bars

At BGASC, we have a wide range of Johnson Matthey silver bars as well. Minted ingots feature the same design elements as their gold bar counterparts. Also available are silver cast bars.

When browsing our selection of Johnson Matthey cast silver bars, you’ll notice slight differences among them. For example, some bars will have Canadian serial numbers. These cast bars are typically in larger sizes and are more elongated than typical cast bars.

Platinum Bars

We also carry a 10 oz platinum bar from Johnson Matthey. This .9995 pure platinum minted ingot features similar design elements as other Johnson Matthey minted ingots.
