Perth Mint Platinum
Perth Mint Platinum at BGASC
Platinum bullion has seen an increase in popularity over the years, due to rising platinum prices as well as more and more mints creating platinum coinage and bars. The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf was introduced in 1988, with more and more platinum coin series following after. One mint that has embraced platinum coinage is the Perth Mint as they create a handful of popular annual releases in this metal. Learn more about Perth Mint platinum, right here at BGASC.
Australian Platinum Kangaroo
The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Gold Kangaroo back in 1989 as a proof coin, with bullion coins following in 1990. Australian Silver Kangaroos debuted in 2015 with a full BU roll-out in 2016 as the Perth Mint’s first .9999 pure silver coin program. This was then followed by the release of the Australian Platinum Kangaroos in 2018.
These coins contain 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum and feature the same design elements as the Australian Silver Kangaroo. These coins have been issued every year since 2018.
Australian Platinum Platypus
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf in 1988. However, the Perth Mint released the Australian Platinum Platypus one year prior. 1 oz platypus coins were first minted in 2011 and have been issued annually. These coins contain 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum and have a face value of $100 (AUD). The reverse shows the image of the platypus swimming in the water. Coins are also issued in 1/3 oz and 1.5 oz.
Australian Platinum Lunar Series III
The Perth Mint Lunar Series debuted in 1996. 2020 not only saw the debut of Lunar Series III but also platinum coins in the overall series. Coins are issued in a 1 Troy oz size made from .9995 pure platinum. While designs in the series differ based on gold and silver, platinum coins in the series use the designs seen on gold coins in the Lunar Series.
Australian Platinum Emperor Penguin
These coins debuted in 2018 with a 1/3 oz size. Perth Mint coin programs typically feature animals native to Australia. While the Emperor Penguin is found throughout Antarctica, the territory was placed under the control of the Australian Commonwealth in 1933. Now, Australia claims a 42% share of the continent.
These coins contain .9995 pure platinum and have a mintage of just 25,000.
