Design

The obverse shows multiple bald eagle designs with a mountainous backdrop, reflecting the birds natural habitat. These raptors prefer to live near large bodies of water where they primarily hunt fish, but they are flexible feeders that will also eat birds, mammals, and carrion. The reverse shows a single bald eagle in flight. Each note includes a UV security feature that becomes visible under a black light.

History

The bald eagle has long represented the United States as the national bird and is also known for its inspiring conservation comeback. Once on the brink of extinction, bald eagle populations have rebounded and can now be seen in many parts of North America. Their name comes from the striking white feathers on their heads that appear once they reach maturity, creating a bold contrast with their dark brown bodies.
