History

Gold Pesos were introduced in Cuba during a short window in the early 20th century. Cuba had long used Spanish Pesos as its primary currency. As the country sought independence in the late 1800s, efforts began to create unique Cuban coinage. In 1915 and 1916, the U.S. Mint struck these gold coins with designs by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber.
