Design

The obverse shows a Spanish woman kneeling with a candle, with San Xavier del Bac visible behind her and white doves flying overhead. The image recalls the Jesuit missionaries who, led by Father Eusebio Kino, crossed the Sonoran Desert in the late 1600s. These missionaries built missions, introduced agriculture, and worked to connect cultures in a challenging landscape.

History

San Xavier del Bac, often called the White Dove of the Desert, is one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in Arizona. Located south of Tucson on the Tohono Oodham San Xavier Indian Reservation, the mission was founded in 1692 and completed in 1797. Its baroque facade and interior frescoes reflect a mix of European and indigenous influences.
