Design History

The Idaho Goldbacks each feature a different design representing elements of Idahos history. Long before European contact, the region that would become Idaho was home to numerous Indigenous groups, including the Nez Perce, Shoshone, Bannock, Coeur d’Alene, Pend d’Oreilles, and Northern Paiute. These nations lived throughout the regions diverse landscapes and developed deep knowledge of the land and its resources over many generations. American exploration increased with the arrival of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. Soon after, fur traders, Christian missionaries, and settlers traveling the Oregon Trail in the 1840s passed through the region, bringing significant changes to Indigenous ways of life.
