Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins at BGASC
One of the most well-known and recognizable mints in the world is the Perth Mint. Established in 1899, the Perth Mint was originally a colonial branch of the Royal Mint of England, along with the Melbourne Mint and Sydney Mint. The Perth Mint is the last branch standing and currently is under the ownership and control of the state government of Western Australia. Background of the series
The kangaroo is such a popular coin image, that even the Royal Australian Mint uses it on their circulation currency. However, the Perth Mint Silver Kangaroo Coins debuted in 1993 as a proof strike. The popularity of the annual release led to a BU coin being released annually, starting in 2015.
The debut of the Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins in 2015 was also the introduction of the Perth Mint’s first-ever .9999 pure silver bullion coin. This paved the way for other annual coin programs from the Perth Mint to increase their purity as well.
Design of the Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins
Most annual coin programs from the Perth Mint, such as the Silver Kookaburra series, feature unique images of the animal with every year of issue. However, the design of the Australian Silver Kangaroo has remained the same since 2015.
The reverse field of the coin is based on a 1938 design for the Australian copper penny. This design features the red kangaroo leaping across the outback, in right-profile relief, with a background consisting of rays of sunshine.
The obverse of the Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins displays the reigning British monarchs’ effigy. This has included several unique designs in just a short period of time.

- Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark (2019-2023).
- King Charles III, created by Dan Thorne (2024-present).
Further Information about Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins
Australian Silver Kangaroo Coins will arrive in individual protective plastic flips. However, bulk options are also available. Mint-sealed tubes of 25 coins are available, as well as Monster Boxes of 10 tubes, for 250 silver coins in total.
These coins are available in just a 1 Troy oz size. Every coin has a face value of 1 Dollar, backed by the Australian government.
The image seen on the reverse of these coins has become a staple for other products by the Perth Mint. The kangaroo can be seen on minted ingots from the Perth Mint as the reverse of their Silver Bars features a repeating pattern of the kangaroo.
Unique Variations
As mentioned above, proof strikes in this series have been made available since 1993. To go with this, gilded coins and colorized coins are also available in the series. Colorized coins are made by applying a color lacquer to the coin while gilded coins are created by applying a thin layer of 24-karat gold to the silver coin. The unique variations of these coins are available in other sizes as well, such as 2 oz and 5 oz. However, the BU version of the coin is available in just a 1 oz weight.
