Design

The obverse artwork on each 1/2 Arizona Goldback Gold Note depicts a Spanish woman kneeling with a candle in hand, surrounded by flying white doves and the San Xavier del Bac mission in the background. This imagery pays tribute to the Jesuit explorers of the 1600s and 1700s whose expeditions mapped early Arizona and influenced the establishment of lasting settlements. Their legacy reflects both discovery and the challenges of cultural transformation in the region.

History

The design celebrates San Xavier del Bac, sometimes called the White Dove of the Desert. This mission stands south of Tucson on the Tohono Oodham San Xavier Indian Reservation. A well-known example of Spanish Colonial architecture, it remains active today as both a parish and a National Historic Landmark, admired for its white exterior and preserved interior art.
