Goldbacks are privately issued notes that serve as a voluntary local currency. Each note is made from a thin layer of 24-karat gold that is sealed between durable layers of protective polymer. This process creates a flexible note that contains a small but precise amount of real gold. Goldbacks are designed to make gold more usable in everyday transactions while still maintaining the inherent value of the metal. The program originally began in Utah and has gradually expanded into several other states. With the launch of the Idaho Goldback series, the program continues to grow with designs that highlight the identity and natural features of the state. Currently, 1/4 Idaho Goldback Gold Note Sets of 100 are available at BGASC.

Design
The obverse design of the 1/4 Idaho Goldback Gold Note shows Justitia standing with Hells Canyon visible behind her. Hells Canyon was shaped over millions of years by the steady erosion of the Snake River. Positioned along the border between Idaho and Oregon, the canyon reaches a depth of about 7,993 feet, making it the deepest river gorge in North America. Decorative details on Justitias belt include the syringa flower and the monarch butterfly. The syringa, known for its delicate white blossoms and light fragrance, is the official state flower of Idaho. The monarch butterfly, named the state insect in 1992, adds another natural symbol connected to Idaho.
History
Justitia, the Roman personification of Justice, has long been used as a symbol of fairness in Western culture. She is commonly shown wearing a blindfold to represent impartial judgment. In addition, she holds scales used to weigh arguments and a double-edged sword that symbolizes the authority of justice to enforce decisions. Her name comes from the Latin term for righteousness and fairness. The imagery associated with Justitia reflects the idea that justice should be applied consistently and without favoritism.
