Each 2 Arizona Goldback Gold Note arrives sealed in a protective currency sleeve. The 2 Goldback denomination made its debut in early 2025 with the Florida Goldbacks, followed now by this Arizona design. This note honors the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition that explored the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

Design

The obverse design shows the allegory of Exploration paddling through the Grand Canyon in a wooden boat. Major Powell appears further in the distance, guiding his own craft. Powell, who lost his right arm in the Civil War, became one of the 19th centurys most respected explorers and geologists, devoting his life to studying the Western frontier.

History

In May 1869, John Wesley Powell led nine men down the Colorado River from Green River, Wyoming. Their four-boat expedition took three months and became the first recorded navigation of the Grand Canyon. The group overcame numerous hardships, from capsized boats to limited food and supplies. Just before finishing, three members left and tragically lost their lives after departing the canyon.
