Austrian Silver Philharmonics at BGASC

One of the most popular coin programs in all of Europe is the Austrian Gold Philharmonic series. This gold coin program has been issued since 1989 with a design that has remained unchanged. The popularity of the series has led to the creation of two more coins, one in platinum, and one in silver. Learn more about the Austrian Silver Philharmonic right here, at BGASC.

Series Background

The Philharmonic series was first released in 1989 by the Austrian Mint. Throughout portions of the 1990s, the Austrian Gold Philharmonic was either the best-selling coin in Europe, or the world. This popularity led to the debut Austrian Silver Philharmonic, in 2008.

The Austrian Silver Philharmonic has a face value of 1.50 euros and a purity of .999 pure silver. While the platinum coin has 2 weight options, and the gold coin has 5, the Austrian Silver Philharmonic has just the 1 oz option.

The design of the coin has remained the same since 1989 as the name and design of the coin were inspired by the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1842 and is considered by many to be one of the finest orchestras in the world. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra calls the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria its home.

Design

The design of the coin was created by Thomas Pesendorfer who served for over 20 years as Austria’s Chief Engraver. The design has been used since 1989 on the gold coin. When the silver coin debuted in 2008, the same design was used.

  • Obverse: The pipe organ from the Golden Hall in the Musikverein. This is shown in front-facing relief in the center of the coin as identifying marks surround the image. These marks include the face value, metal content, year of issue, and the country.
  • Reverse: A collection of musical instruments played by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. A cello is displayed front and center and is flanked on either side by two violins. Behind them are the images of a harp, bassoon, and a French horn. The orchestra’s name is inscribed at the top.

Variations of the Austrian Silver Philharmonic

Most BU coin programs offer at least a proof strike of the BU coin. The Austrian Silver Philharmonic has two unique strikes, none of which are proofs.

  • Colorized: A colored lacquer is applied to the reverse side to give the collection of instruments a life-like appearance.
  • Gilded: A thin layer of 24-karat gold is applied to the reverse to make half of the instruments look as if they’re made of real gold.

Packaging

The Austrian Silver Philharmonic can be purchased individually in protective plastic flips. For larger orders, two bulk options are available, tubes of 25, or Monster Boxes of 500. Unique variations, such as the gilded and colorized options, are available in individual flips.
