Silver Dollar History
The US Mint first struck the Silver Dollar in 1804. These coins had a face value of $1 (USD) but were scarcely issued until the UM Mint upped the silver content in their coins to 90%.
That change happened in 1836, and as such, Silver Dollars were regularly issued from 1836 to 1873. These coins then took a 5-year hiatus due to an influx of silver. When they returned in 1878, they returned with arguably their most well-known design. These coins are commonly referred to as Morgan Silver Dollars.
Morgan Silver Dollars were produced annually from 1878 to 1904, and then once more in 1921. These coins are named after their designer, George T. Morgan. A total of 656,843,390 of these coins were struck across 5 different branches of the US Mint.
In 1918, the United States melted down nearly 300 million Silver Dollars and sold them to the British. Then came the Pittman Act which required the US Mint to once again strike millions of Silver Dollars. What followed was the Peace Silver Dollar.
Peace Silver Dollars were struck annually from 1921 to 1928, and again from 1934 to 1935. In total, 3 branches of the US Mint produced 190,877,279 of these coins.
Common Grades for Certified Silver Dollars
Coins are graded on the Sheldon scale of 1 to 70, with 70 being regarded as a flawless specimen. Due to the age of these Silver Dollars, it’s common to see these coins graded in the mid to lower 60s. These coins will have moderate marks, such as hairlines, with potentially larger abrasions as well. Coins above 60 are prefaced by the designation of “MS” meaning Mint State. Other grade prefaces are the following:
- AU: About Uncirculated – Graded between 50-58
- XF: Extremely Fine – Graded between 40-45
