Platinum Coins at BGASC

Gold bullion was first introduced to the public in 1967 with the South African Gold Krugerrand. Silver bullion was then introduced in the late 1970s and further exploded in the 1980s with the birth of numerous silver coin programs. While platinum bullion didn’t debut till later, they’ve become another popular investment option. Learn more about Platinum Coins right here at BGASC.

American Platinum Eagle

The American Eagle series from the US Mint is among the most popular in the world. The gold and silver series was introduced in 1986, and the platinum series followed in 1997. Similar to the American Gold Eagle, the platinum series is annually released in four sizes (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.)

The BU series has had the same obverse of Lady Liberty and the same reverse of the soaring eagle since 1997. The proof series has had alternating reverse designs from 1997 to 2017. The reverse has remained the same since 2018, but the obverse has now featured unique imagery every year since.

Australian Platinum Coins

The Perth Mint has embraced platinum bullion over the years as many of their annual coin programs have started to offer platinum versions. The Perth Mint is credited as the first major industrialized nation in the world to introduce investment-grade platinum bullion coinage.

  • Australian Platinum Kangaroo: These coins debuted in 2018. They feature the same obverse and reverse designs of the Australian Silver Kangaroo. Coins contain .9995 pure platinum.
  • Australian Platinum Koala: The authorization of platinum coins from the Perth Mint came in 1997. The following year they issued the Australian Platinum Koala. The design of the koala changes with every year of release.
  • Australian Platinum Platypus: Maybe the most well-known platinum coin program from the Perth Mint, the Platypus series debuted in 2011. The platypus is found on the reverse while the reigning British monarch is on the obverse.
  • Lunar Series: While the Lunar Series debuted in 1996, platinum coins in the series weren’t introduced until 2020 for the debut of Lunar Series III. The reverse design of this series mirrors the gold versions in this series.

Austrian Platinum Philharmonic

The Austrian Platinum Philharmonic was introduced in 2016. The Philharmonic series, previously issued in just gold and silver, is known for its obverse and reverse designs by Thomas Pesendorfer. The obverse features the Golden Music Hall while the reverse displays a collection of instruments played by the Philharmonic orchestra. Coins contain 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.

British Platinum Coins

The Royal Mint has embraced platinum bullion coinage over the years as many of their coin programs have since included platinum coins.

  • British Platinum Britannia: Platinum coins in the series debuted in 2018, 31 years after the inception of the British Gold Britannia. Platinum coins are issued in both 1 oz and 1/10 oz weights and shows Phillip Nathan’s Britannia design on the reverse.
  • British Platinum Royal Arms: The Royal Mint introduced a 1 oz platinum coin in this series, one year after its debut in 2020. The obverse and reverse mirror the silver coin program.
  • British Platinum Queen’s Beasts: This 10-coin series debuted in 2016 to showcase the 10 heraldic beasts at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. One year after the debut of the series, the Royal Mint included a 1 oz platinum coin for the remaining designs.

Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 as the first major competitor to the South African Gold Krugerrand. In 1988, the success led to the Royal Canadian Mint introducing both a silver and platinum version of the popular coin.

These platinum coins contain .9995 pure platinum and feature the same obverse and reverse designs of the gold and silver coin programs.

These coins were initially released in four weights (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.) In 1993, a 1/20 oz coin was introduced. A 1/15 oz coin debuted the next year, just for one year. From 2002 to 2008 the Royal Canadian Mint didn’t issue any Platinum Maple Leafs. The series came back in 2009, with just a 1 oz weight, and has been issued annually ever since.

African Platinum Coins

  • Somalian Platinum Elephant: Platinum coins in the series debuted in 2016. Struck by the Bavarian State Mint, this coin program showcases unique images of the elephant on the reverse. The image shown on the reverse matches the imagery seen on the silver and gold coins. Each coin contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Rwandan African Wildlife: Platinum coins in the series debuted in 2022 with the release of the pelican (15th overall design in the series.) Coins are made from 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum. The obverse shows the emblem of Rwanda while the reverse shows the animal along with the African continent. The 2 releases after the pelican (Nile crocodile and gorilla) also have platinum versions.
  • South Africa Big Five: Struck by the Rand Refinery, these coins are made from 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum. Each coin shows one of Africa’s Big 5 animals – the buffalo, leopard, rhino, lion, and elephant.
